The small projects that came before the bigger ones: Pear Factory!, a browser clicker game from 2021 and my first code on GitHub; a Kahoot-style quiz and a spacebar timing game from school; Calendar and Todo, the first two parts of a planned five-part "Productivity Terminal"; Flow Field, two p5.js sketches; and a Spring Boot shop-and-cart practice app.

Problem

Learning by building small, finished things.

Approach

Mostly plain JavaScript, HTML and CSS with class-based code and a few custom display fonts I reused across apps. Flow Field uses p5.js with Perlin noise and WebGL. The shop-and-cart app is Java with Spring Boot and Thymeleaf.

Process

4 dated steps, from the project’s history

  1. 01

    Pear Factory!

A clicker game with buyable upgrades. A collaborator, Chase, added the click particle system through a pull request the same day, the earliest collaboration in my GitHub history.

  2. 02

    School projects and sketches uploaded

The quiz, the Space timing game, Calendar, Todo and Flow Field went up on September 1 and 2, 2024. The school projects are older than the upload.

A start screen split into black and white halves with the word SPACE in large type.

  3. 03

    Refactor and visual refresh

Refactored Calendar and gave Calendar, Todo and Space a visual pass with new screenshots. See Fig. 1, above.

  4. 04

    Spring Boot practice

A small shop and cart with Thymeleaf views, built with mvnd.

Results

Calendar, Todo, Space and Quiz are public on GitHub Pages.
